Evangeline-isms

Evangeline's such a funny kid. I can't believe how fast time goes...I wish I had written out a lot of her mannerisms these last few years, so I'll begin now. Not only is she humorous, but she is so kind and strange! Here are a few of the things she says and does at age 3:

Evangeline pronounces "Daddy" as "Daddin" and loves to greet him at the door when he comes home from work. Kevin and I frequently talk about the day when she will say "Daddy" correctly and it makes us both sad.

She recently started calling me "Mommy" which might not seem like a big deal..but she said it so slowly and intentionally. It took me a few days to get used to, bc for over 3 years she only called me "Mom"

She points to Kevin and says "Mommy" and then to my brother Billy and says "Daddy" and then to me "Olaf!" and starts laughing hysterically. She likes to point at people and call them something else on purpose.

She just learned how to raise her left eyebrow and does it to get a laugh out of you. She also likes to make her eyes bigger and raise her hands up high in a slow and dramatic fashion.

She'll start whispering and talking in a deep voice.

In order to prevent going to sleep, she will ask us for more reading time when we finish a Bible story. How do we say no to that?

We transitioned her to a toddler bed so she can get up and come out when she's awake. She refuses to come out and still waits for us to come in and get her. But we know she gets up bc there is always a new toy in her bed when we go in to greet her for the day! Today there were two paint brushes. The other day it was a toy car.

She likes to hide her bear Bobo in random places and forgets where she puts him. She can't sleep without him, and the longest Kevin's spent looking for him was nearly an hour. She was so sad when she had to go to bed with a replacement bear. Five minutes later, Kevin found Bobo and went back into her room. She was so relieved.

We know when Evangeline is awake in the morning because she is either singing or talking to Bobo. Sometimes we hear her say "No Bobo! No! That's mine! Not yours Bobo!" I wonder what they're fighting over.

Her counting is way off. "One...two...tree....seven, eight, nine, TEN!"

Recently, she's been giving the dogs treats and she says "Eshtee, Shmokey, no! tit down, tit down!" ("Estee, Smokey, no! Sit down, sit down!") Then she happily hands the dogs their treats. When Estee licks her, she goes "Dog eat me!" while giggling.

In speech therapy, she refuses to speak until the last few minutes when they hand out skittles as a reward. Then she will say every single word they asked for in the 40 minutes session. Incentives work for this child.

She calls Elianna "Na-Na" and Anna from Frozen "Na-Na' and Moana "Na-Na"

She prefers to play with Daddy, but during the day she likes to read with Mommy. Her favorite books are Disney-related with princesses or anything with Minnie or Mickey Mouse.

When Elianna is crying she says "Mommy, Na-na drying...it's otay Na-Na..aww..Na-na...it's otay." Sometimes she will mimick me and go "Aww...hi baby...hi baby..."

She loves the Trolls Movie Soundtrack. And when she sees Justin Timberlake, she thinks it's her Tito Alejo, who's the main worship leader at church.

She LOVES church. When you ask her what she did at church, she says she goes running. She waits patiently for the entire service to end before she starts running around the sanctuary. Recently she's been talking and interacting with more kids, which makes us so happy! She will usually only talk to Nathan, but she's warming up to interacting more with Sammy, Olivia, Levi, and the Escala girls Lilly, Mady, and Jaelen!

When Kevin is done with Bible stories every night, she demands to read it back to him. She will start saying things that don't make sense and then start singing. Kevin is very patient when this occurs. She will start saying things are in the picture that aren't there...today it was about a burning bush but she kept saying it was about baby Jesus.

Kevin will start beatboxing randomly and automatically Evangeline will start dancing.

Someone at church will start playing drums after service is done, and Evangeline will start dancing again.

Music plays, Evangeline dances... period.

Evangeline likes to lip sync to songs in the car. We keep encouraging her to use her words bc she's already too silent!

When things don't go her way, or we say no, her big eyes will fill with tears and she won't cry or whine...she will only ask for tissue to wipe her eyes. It's actually pretty heartbreaking. It takes a strong will to not give in when she suffers silently that way.

One Week Left

In exactly one week, Kevin has to decide where he will go for school...will it be Rochester, Miami, or UMass? He's still waitlisted at UMass so we aren't sure about that just yet, but we are actually visiting Rochester in a few days to see how we feel! His Miami trip was stressful to say the least. Evangeline had been sick the entire week beforehand, and Kevin even called the pediatrician to make sure it was okay to leave. The doc had been under the impression Evangeline was sick with strep throat, fever, and cold. But I felt like it was worse, and that it was progressing to become pneumonia. The doc gave Kevin the go, and once he landed in Miami, not only was Evangeline still sick, but Elianna got a 103 fever! It was a hot mess in our home. Both girls went to ER, Evangeline had gotten admitted and was in the hospital for five whole days due to bilateral pneumonia (which is the worst it's ever been!) Kevin was out of town for the first time ever, and it was just exhaustin...

This Is Us: Why It Hits Home

A little over two years ago, I was crying to my cousin because I had just found out I was suffering a miscarriage. Not only was it a miscarriage of a baby whom I was losing, but it was also the loss of a twin that Elianna would not grow up with. And when a person miscarries a twin early enough, the baby doesn't come out the way a typical miscarriage happens...the baby just gets reabsorbed into the mom and into the twin. "You should really watch This Is Us. The first episode is about a miscarriage too, except the character played by Mandy Moore loses a triplet." my cousin told me through her tears, as she comforted me since the wounds were so fresh. There are a lot of things within the show that I do not relate with: I never lost a dad to an unexpected death. I do not have an adoptive sibling or was adopted myself looking for a birth parent. I do not have an addiction to eating. But I could relate to miscarriage, and I do plan to adopt one day, so that's as far as ...

California Love

I still remember Kevin calling my cell phone as I volunteered at Evangeline's co-op February 7, 2019. I was worried because he usually never called on mornings, and I thought something was wrong. I immediately answered saying, "Kev, are you ok???" And he shouted, "WE ARE GOING TO ROCHESTER, BABY!!!!" To that, I howled with joy, and started laughing like a maniac. Kevin had been applying for PhD programs the last two months and dedicated blood, sweat, and tears to having a bomb mission statement and working hard for a high GRE score. After a lot of stress and being disappointed in his ultimate score, and over $1,000 spent on prep material and applications, it was a HUGE weight lifted off his shoulders! And mine too... he spent so many days worried that no school would accept him because in his words: "It is REALLY competitive to get into a PhD program...and even harder to get a tenure position after all that time dedicated to school." So he stal...
